1.5 cubes of sand out of the strip between a shed and the boundary fence. Most Perth councils want stormwater dealt with on your own block, so if you've put up a shed, a patio or a new driveway, this job is coming for you eventually — and doing it with a shovel is a full weekend and a sore back.

This is the job zero tail swing was made for: the machine's back end never swings past its tracks, so it works hard up against the fence without touching the neighbour's colorbond, and the ViO17-1 retracts to 950mm to get in there in the first place. Dig, set the soakwells, run the pipe, backfill — done with the standard buckets that come free with every mini excavator hire.

1.7T Yanmar ViO17-1 · Digga PDX2 auger drive · siteworks + footings

Two jobs in one hire. First the siteworks: strip the old surface, clear the rubble and level the pad with the machine and buckets. Then the bit that would have broken a post-hole shovel — over 30 footing holes for the deck posts, bored with the Digga PDX2 auger drive.

The auger does in seconds what takes long minutes by hand in Perth sand, and every hole comes out straight and to a consistent depth, so the posts line up and the subframe goes down level first go. Swap between bucket and auger on the same machine, on the same day, in the same hire.

1.7T Yanmar ViO17-1 · limestone block lifter (SWL 300kg)

A commercial wall job in front of a busy row of shops — a lot of blocks, and at around 250kg each they were never getting moved by hand. The block lifter bolts onto the machine, picks each block cleanly, swings it over and sets it down on the course — level, first go, no shuffle-and-swear — while the machine works out of a single parking bay.

Rated to 300kg SWL, adjustable to your block size, and it fits down access that a crane truck can't reach. It's the cheapest attachment we hire and the one people thank us for — walls go up faster and backs stay intact.
